Welcome to MSU Extension’s Community Resources Program

The Community Resources Program is designed to provide information, education, resources, technical assistance and services that improve the overall quality of people’s lives and help create healthier Montana communities. Community matters. Community-based cooperation is a common thread woven throughout the fabric of rural life across Montana. Historically, the formation of community-based ‘rural cooperatives’ helped maximize limited resources, solve problems for the common good and provide much needed services. Today researchers are focusing more at the community level because they realize that changes at the community level foster and sustain individual behavioral change, improve overall quality of life and increase economic productivity – all essentials for creating healthier communities which are safe, thriving, vibrant and resilient.

A major activity of the Community Resources Program involves providing assistance in developing and securing public and private funds, primarily from grants, to support programming efforts of MSU Extension and local communities. The Community Resources Program fosters and encourages community renewal and transformation that results in healthier communities. Specific activities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. monitoring needs and interest areas and connecting with possible funding sources
  2. reviewing government, foundation and corporate sources of funding, reports and publications
  3. providing grant writing and grant management training seminars and workshops
  4. providing technical assistance with individual proposals
  5. reviewing and commenting on proposals prior to submission

The overall activities of the Community Resources Program are designed to assist in achieving the goals of the MSU Extension Service and the national strategic goal of the Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service (CSREES) – “To support increased economic opportunities and improved quality of life in rural America.”*
